Frequently Asked Questions
General Information
What is Engaged Minds? Engaged Minds, L.L.C. is an educational consulting and tutoring practice based in the Triangle area of North Carolina. We specialize in providing tailored academic support, school selection consulting, and executive functioning coaching for students from preschool through 12th grade.
What makes your approach different? We are neurodiversity advocates. Our methods are research-based and multi-sensory, focusing on the "science of reading" and evidence-based math and writing interventions. We don’t just tutor; we work to rebuild a student’s confidence by meeting them exactly where they are.
Where do sessions take place? We offer in-person sessions for families in the Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill). Additionally, we provide virtual sessions for students nationwide.
Tutoring & Coaching
What subjects do you cover? Our specialized tutoring includes reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, and mathematics. We also offer targeted support for SAT and ACT prep.
What is Executive Functioning (EF) Coaching? EF coaching focuses on the "how" of learning. We help students—particularly middle and high schoolers—develop essential life skills such as organization, time management, task initiation, and study strategies to help them succeed independently.
How do you support students with dyslexia? Our team includes specialists trained in structured literacy and other multi-sensory approaches. We focus on phonemic awareness and structured literacy to help students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences thrive.
How are Engaged Minds reading tutors trained?
All Engaged Minds reading tutors complete training in the Engaged Minds Structured Literacy Method before working independently with students. Structured literacy is an explicit, systematic, and cumulative approach to teaching reading that is supported by decades of research for students with dyslexia and other language-based reading difficulties. Tutors are trained in our instructional methods, lesson planning process, and assessment procedures. They receive ongoing coaching, instructional support, and quality assurance to help ensure instruction is delivered consistently across our literacy program. Individual tutors bring different backgrounds, experiences, and specialized professional training, and we carefully match each student with the tutor who best fits their needs.
Consulting & School Selection
How can you help with school selection? Choosing the right environment is critical for a student’s success. We provide expert recommendations and consultations to help families find the "best fit" school—whether private, public, or charter—based on the student's unique learning profile and needs.
Do you provide support for IEP or 504 meetings? Yes. Our educational consulting services include support and advocacy for families navigating learning challenges, helping ensure students receive the necessary accommodations and resources within their school systems.
