Meet Ian

Hello! I’m Ian. I’m a parent, educator, and occasional woodworker. I love working with students to construct knowledge. I believe in the importance of building relationships alongside academic skills. Young, old, and in between - we all have so many parts of us that we bring to the table at any one time. When showing up as a tutor, I want to honor what each student brings with them and be mindful of what they take away.

I unexpectedly discovered my love for teaching while in grad school at Appalachian State. I tried sticking with the original plan for my career for a few years, but eventually I was drawn back into the classroom, teaching math at a public high school in Durham. I started tutoring around the same time, and have not been able to quit ever since. It’s some of the most gratifying work I’ve ever done.

In addition to tutoring, I currently work as a learning and development consultant, helping organizations design, implement, and evaluate performance improvement programs. Whether I’m working with groups or individuals, I always try to begin with the end in mind so that, together, we can achieve the results we want to achieve and do what we want to do.
