Meet Sarah
Hi, I’m Sarah Fitch! I have been teaching in Wake County Public Schools for several years, focused on literacy and special education/exceptional children. I am passionate about working with students and sharing my love of reading with them, even and especially when they are reluctant or struggling readers. My philosophy is that reading is for everybody, and that starting with the “building blocks” of phonics provides a proven foundation for success. I am neurodivergent myself and believe that the flexible use of neurodiversity-affirming methods like multisensory learning, chunking tasks, and including movement can benefit all students, not just those with a specific diagnosis.
I grew up in the Washington DC area and got my BA at The George Washington University, then moved to Raleigh in 2008 and went to NCSU for my Masters’ degree. I worked as a web content writer and technical writer before becoming a Wake County teacher. I was drawn to teaching because I love kids and the unique creativity, humor and curiosity they bring to learning. I found teaching middle grades especially rewarding because it’s such an important and overlooked developmental stage, when students are starting to understand themselves as active learners and individuals with their own priorities and goals. I loved the students and faculty I worked with in Special Ed - Cross Categorical Resource at Moore Square Middle School and Carnage Middle School in Raleigh.
I live in Cary with my husband, my mom and our dog MacGuffin. When I’m not teaching I love reading, cooking, playing board games, and taking classes through Raleigh’s Redbud Writing Project.
